Muse hit 10 million downloads in 40 days — faster than ChatGPT ever did

10.2 million US downloads, 10.9 million worldwide, in 40 days — a feat only 11 other apps have ever pulled off. But downloads are a one-time event. The numbers that decide whether Muse matters are the ones that come after.

The milestone, in numbers

📲 10.2M US / 10.9M worldwide

Sensor Tower estimates, reported by TechCrunch Oct 20: Muse crossed 10M US downloads within 40 days of its Sept 8 launch. Only 11 other apps have ever done it — mostly mobile games. The last non-game was Meta's own Threads, July 2023. Remember: this was achieved in just two countries (US + Canada).

🏁 The comparison

In their first 40 days: ChatGPT 3.7M downloads, Grok 500K, Claude 200K — and each needed more than 100 days to reach 10M. Muse also hit No. 1 on the App Store 10 days after launch, passing ChatGPT. Meta poured fuel on it: 39% of Meta's total advertising spend went to Muse in October.

📊 The caveat

Engagement tells the other half. 14-day US retention is 23% — above the 16% rival average and Claude's 17% at launch — but a BNP Paribas analyst puts it behind ChatGPT. Daily actives only crossed 2.5M on Oct 16; ChatGPT sits at ~55M US actives. Distribution works. Whether people stay is still open.

The honest read: downloads ≠ users

  • 39% of Meta's ad spend is the real headline. That share of spend bought the No. 1 App Store spot and the 40-day record. The question isn't whether Meta can distribute — Threads proved it can — it's how long that spend continues and what remains when it stops.
  • Retention is genuinely decent, not miraculous. 23% at 14 days beats the rival-app average — but ChatGPT still leads, and 2.5M DAUs is a rounding error next to ChatGPT's 55M. Watch the DAU trend (up 15% week over week as of Oct 16), not the download counter.
  • Two-country ceiling. Every figure here comes from the US and Canada only. The growth story restarts from zero when Meta expands — and there's no announced timetable for that.
  • The next lever is Wonder. Meta says its new frontier model Muse Wonder (Oct 12) will reach the consumer app, subscribers first. If that moves engagement, the 40-day record was the trailer, not the movie.

3 prompts for the milestone era

Muse has scale now — that makes good agent habits worth more, not less.

Become a power user this week

I want to go from casual Muse user to power user in 7 days. Give me one focused exercise per day — each should use a different capability: an agent task with approvals, a connector integration, a long multi-step task, a voice interaction, and an image or document task. Each day should take under 30 minutes.

Track Muse like an analyst

I want to track whether Muse's growth is real. Build me a simple monthly scorecard: which 5 numbers should I record (downloads, DAUs, retention, app store rank, ad spend share), where can I find each for free, and what would a healthy vs. worrying trend look like? Keep it to things I can check in 15 minutes a month.

Compare AI assistants before you commit

Compare Muse, ChatGPT, Claude and Grok as personal AI agents for my daily life — not chatbots, but agents that take action. Score each on: what tasks they can actually complete, which apps they connect to, privacy controls, and cost. Then recommend which one I should invest my setup time in, given I'm a typical smartphone user, not a developer.
